Education in Therapeutics

A learning resource for medical undergraduates and postgraduates

This is a development web site for prototype learning material. In time, it will contain material of practical value to those wishing to improve their prescribing skills, by learning how to choose and use medicines well. To suit the individual learner, the site will present material in several different levels. For each disease/condition, the material will comprise:

 Principles of treatment

 Clinical pharmacology of medicines used

 Fact-files on individual medicines

 Self-assessment opportunities

The principles of treatment will outline the clinical approach to patient management and summarize the evidence on which this is based.

For each group of medicines used, the clinical pharmacology section will describe:

Pharmacological effects and how these are achieved

 Major unwanted effects

 Important interactions with other medicines

The fact-files will include detailed information on the individual medicines, where they possess properties not common to all members of the group. You'll be able to enter this level directly via an alphabetical index accessible on the home page.

The self-assessment facility includes patient management problems and multiple-choice questions to test your existing knowledge. Choosing an answer to a question will trigger a response showing whether the answer was correct, and an explanation of why it was correct (or incorrect). Incorrect answers will trigger a link to the relevant text for revision.

You'll be able to enter the site at any level. If you're new to this material you'll probably want to read through the text first. If you're revisiting the site and are already familiar with the subject, you may prefer to test yourself first, to identify the gaps in your knowledge.
